Adelle Long Smith passed from this life on March 6, 2021 at the age of 85. Adelle was born in Grow Texas on July 3, 1935 to Joe and Cora (Green) Long, and was the youngest of 5 children. Her first job was working for the telephone company when she was in the 8th grade. She went to high school in Paducah, graduated, and then married Wayde Smith on February 7, 1954. They farmed and raised 3 daughters, Judy, Sharma and Colleen, 8 miles South of Paducah, and were members of the Dumont Methodist Church. As a farm wife, she grew vegetables in a large garden, hoed cotton in the summer and tromped it and hauled cotton trailers to the gin in the winter. At the same time, she put 3 meals on the table every day and kept up with all the other household duties. As a mom, she participated in school activities, attended ballgames and helped teach their children the life lessons they needed to become adults. Besides being a loving mother, she was also very close to her cousins, sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
When their youngest daughter was a senior in high school, Adelle said she needed something to do when all the ballgames and school activities were over. So, in October, 1977, they purchased Hall-Scruggs, a dress shop in Paducah. A requirement for selling Merle Norman makeup for Halls included a 3-week training school. Adelle left for California a farm wife/new shop owner and returned a fashionable business woman. Many of her favorite times were from Hall-Scruggs. She loved going to Dallas to Market and she loved the friendships that evolved from the store. She and Wayde had Halls until 1995 when they sold the store and moved to Canyon.
In Canyon, Adelle and Wayde enjoyed volunteering at the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum for as long as their health allowed. When Wayde passed away, part of Adelle went with him. However, her eyes lit up when her grandkids came to see her. Grandchildren, and for a few short years, great-grandchildren help to fill a part of that void until she went to be with him again.
Adelle is preceded in death by her husband, Wayde, siblings Dalton, Oleta and Maureen Long and Betty Daniel. Survivors include her daughter Judy and Darrell Baldwin and grandchildren Alyssa (Amarillo) and Aaron Wayde (Florida), daughter Sharma Smith (San Antonio) and daughter Colleen and Wayne Reed (Silverton), grandchildren Ty and Stefani Reed and great-grandchild Casen and another little boy coming in June (Wichita Falls). grandchildren Drew and April Reed and great-grandchildren Meredith and Maggie Wayde (Shallowater).
