Chelsea MaeAnn Young Read of Matador, Texas departed the earthly world to join her heavenly Father. She was born November 14, 1935 in Dickens, Texas and passed away December 25, 2023 in Lubbock, Texas after an illness. She married Truitt Wesley Read of Dumont, Texas on September 11, 1955 in Alpine, Texas.
Chelsea was preceded in death by her husband Truitt, her father, Brigham Mann Young of Gravette, Arkansas, her mother, Jannie Delphene Dyches Young of Lubbock, her stepmother, Leda White Young of Gravette and her brother, Burnett Mann Young of Gilpin, Texas. She is survived by her daughter Debbie Terry and husband Malcom, her sons Vic Read & Scott Read, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Sister, Kay Prestridge and husband John of Tyler, Texas and Mary Beth Igal of Ralls, Texas.
Chelsea was a life-long member of the Methodist Church in various towns. She served as a Matador Methodist Church delegate to the Northwest Texas Conference for many years. She was a lay pastor and taught confirmation classes at multiple churches.
Chelsea became a member of the Gamma Eta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a women's educator sorority promoting professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education, on May 1, 1981. She was most recently chair of the Necrology Committee.
Chelsea graduated from Sul Ross University in Alpine with a Master's degree in education. She attended West Texas University for additional credits. She taught high school government, U.S. history, grade school, junior high, and special education at Friona, Frenship, Canadian, Amherst, Crosbyton and Matador, where she retired.
Chelsea loved to swim and shared that love by teaching lessons, including at a Girl Scout camp in New York when she was in college. She also taught water aerobics classes for women.
