Edward Ray Wootan, lovingly known as “Papa,” was born on December 22, 1946, in Bremond, Texas, to Earl and Alma Wootan. He later moved to Spur, Texas, where he graduated from Spur High School and met the love of his life, Deloras France. The two were married on February 14, 1966, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love, devotion, and commitment.
Edward proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. His service reflected his bravery, resilience, and deep sense of duty.
Following his military service, Edward dedicated much of his working life to public service. He retired from the Monterey Post Office, where he worked faithfully as a clerk for 40 years.
Edward and Deloras were blessed with two children, Brent and Christy. Family was the center of Papa’s world, and he cherished every moment spent with those he loved.
Edward loved hunting and fishing, but more often he could be found repairing the many things his wife, daughter, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters managed to break around the horse farm. Whether fixing fences, tools, or whatever needed attention, Papa was always there with steady hands and quiet patience.
Strong-willed and ornery in the way only a true Papa could be, Edward had a personality that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Beneath that tough exterior was a man who deeply loved his family, and his girls were his pride and joy. He was always deeply proud of them and never failed to be there when he was needed.
Edward was a lifelong Baptist and was baptized at Bethel Baptist Church in Spur, Texas.
Edward Ray “Papa” Wootan passed away on March 25, 2026, in Canyon, Texas.
He is survived by his daughter, Christy Robinson; granddaughters, Shelby Crow and Mckinze Robinson; and great-granddaughters, Braylie and Hayven Roberts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Alma Wootan; his brothers, Vernon and Curtis Wootan; and his son, Brent Wootan.
Edward will be deeply missed, but his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him. His life was a gift, and his memory will forever be a blessing.
