Garland Edward “Big Guy” Cartwright
October 9, 1937 – October 28, 2025
Garland Edward Cartwright, affectionately known as “Big Guy,” passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at Matador Health and Rehabilitation in Matador, Texas, at the age of 88.
Garland was born on October 9, 1937, in Matador, Texas, to Herman and Pearl Cartwright. He was a lifelong resident of Matador and a proud graduate of Matador High School, Class of 1957. He also attended Texas Tech University and West Texas State.
Garland served his country with honor in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1962. After returning home, he began a long and successful career with the Texas Department of Transportation, where he worked from 1962 until his retirement in 1996. Even after retiring, Garland stayed active, working for Red Ball Gin in Roaring Springs and farming for the Gwinn family.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who was deeply loved by all who knew him. Garland was known for his kind heart, steady work ethic, and gentle spirit. He took great pride in his family and was a loyal friend to many. In his leisure time, Garland especially loved playing golf, a hobby that brought him much joy.
Garland was preceded in death by his wife, Judy J. Cartwright; his parents, Herman and Pearl Cartwright Simpson; and his brother, Wayne Cartwright.
He is survived by his daughter, Tina Tucker and her husband Cliff of Plano, Texas; and his granddaughter, Christina Andrews.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 3, 2025, at East mound Cemetery in Matador, Texas. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 2, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and again on Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at East mound Cemetery.
Garland’s life was a testament to love, dedication, and quiet strength. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
