Jimmy Whitefield Obituary

Jimmy Whitefield was born on March 5, 1943, in Memphis, Texas, to John and Stella Whitefield. He was the youngest of seven children, with three older brothers and three older sisters who all preceded him in death: Janice Dixon, Johnnie Vines, Chloe Garrett, Alden Whitefield, Harvey Whitefield, and Stanley Whitefield.

On June 20, 1964, Jimmy married Shirley Long in Girard, Texas. Together they built a life centered on family and commitment. They were blessed with two children, Paula Whitefield Sexton and Jay Whitefield. Paula and her husband, Joe, reside in Lubbock, Texas. Jay and his wife, Kyley, also reside in Lubbock. Jimmy’s granddaughter, Rilee Sexton, brought him great pride and joy. Shirley preceded him in death in December 2020.

Jimmy’s professional life was one of remarkable dedication and pride. He began his career with Cap Rock Telephone on October 17, 1966 — a career that would span nearly six decades. Over the years, he served in many capacities, ultimately becoming Executive Vice President and General Manager in March 1989. He took great pride in helping shape Cap Rock into a forward-thinking telecommunications provider, always striving to create a workplace where employees could thrive and to deliver the best, most modern services to customers.

Jimmy was especially proud of the people he worked alongside — both past and present employees — and considered it a true blessing to be part of the Cap Rock family for over fifty-nine years. His leadership extended beyond the company, as he served two terms as President of the Texas Statewide Telephone Association and contributed many additional years on industry committees. He valued collaboration, innovation, and the relationships he built throughout the telecommunications industry.

Jimmy often said he felt incredibly blessed to have devoted his life’s work to Cap Rock Telephone and the telecommunications field. His legacy is one of steady leadership, commitment to excellence, and genuine care for both his employees and his community.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Spur Area Food Bank in his memory.
