Martha Alleen White was born January 14,1938 to parents Jefferson and Suzanne in Marathon, New York.
She met Sam Au Hoon in Honolulu at a party given by Sam’s older brother. Sam always said he fell in love from across the room. It took some convincing for Martha, but they began dating and were married August 18, 1969, while Sam was home from Vietnam for five days.
Through several deployments and duty stations that included Germany, Martha made a home for Sam and her son, Timothy Brian Hicks. They thought their forever – home would be in Kansas as Sam got orders for Ft. Riley, but the Army had other plans, and they were off to New Orleans and purchased a home.
Martha always had a community spirit and civic pride. She organized fund raisers for Sam’s ROTC unit, volunteered at Tulane General Hospital and she and her pet cat Vincent were frequent visitors to nursing homes around New Orleans. With all her altruistic activities, her most important role was mother to Tim and wife to Sam. A full-time homemaker, she preferred the title Procurement Agent and enjoyed donating her time to many worthy causes.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the couple relocated to Paducah where her community service continued. Martha had a special fondness for VFW projects, helped lay the groundwork for promoting Paducah as a desirable retirement community as well as working to establish the old settlers Picnic as an annual event.
Martha passed away November 2,2024. She is Preceded in death by her parents, Jefferson and Suzanne White as well as two sisters, Marilyn and Jean.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Samuel and her son Timothy (Che ‘Rei) of Wisconsin. She was the grandmother to three grandchildren, Bailey, Parker, and Jackson. Siblings Ruby, Harold, Connie, Marge and Suzanne as well as many friends in the community.
Her humor, energy and sprit will be greatly missed.
